West Coast 2009 Day 7

Good morning and HAPPY 4th of July!

It’s is a beautiful morning here in Grand Junction Colorado.

Yesterdays drive through Colorado was simply breathtaking, and the 500 photos taken are proof. The mountains and scenery are SO different from the plains we just drove through it cannot even be described, other than saying you need to see the Rockies in person.

The driving is EXTREMLY technical especially in a Bus. Many of the roads (we took scenic routes) are steep with SHARP switch backs. I have to say the driving was the most difficult of all the states we have been through, even a tad worse than Yellowstone last year. The good news was it was shorter, so Yellowstone still was the worse drive (again in a Bus, beautiful in a car I am sure).

Funny how things work out…Patty had read an article of a man carrying a cross, cross country. Leaving Breckinridge we saw the man resting on the side of the road with his cross. We could not pull over or turn around very easy, but it was freaky considering she just read the article.

The Boys are having a ton of fun, and are enjoying and appreciating the scenery, especially the steep mountain drops that are like roller coasters. They are meeting new kids at every stop during their now ritual nightly swims, and have just been AWESOME travelers.

Patty and I are doing fine and thoroughly enjoying this experience. We feel so blessed every day to be doing this with the kids and each other.

My geek–o-meter (altimeter) paid for itself yesterday, since it was great to see how high we were, and after a while it was “how high are we now”, so I guess the Geek in me paid off LOL…

Last night was a firework show, not to be ungrateful but the worse we have seen. Non the less, it was nice to celebrate our freedom with the traditional fireworks display.

Today will be another drive day to Bryce, where we will rest for actually the beginning of the vacation. We will be in Bryce for 3 days, than Zion 20 miles down the road for 3 days, than Vegas for 2 days. We are all looking forward to resting…

Well, have a VERY BLESSED and safe 4th, and I will speak to you tomorrow.

Pictures are great and will hope to see the Rockies myself sometime in the future.
Glad to hear you are tackeling your technical driving skills challenge with a good outcome.
Very ironic that Patti just read the article about the man with a cross and you then spot him on the road. Must be a hidden meaning in there somewhere.
Hope you all enjoyed the minimalist foreworks anyway. I spent the day at Bill & Robins with Marty, Ruth and Robin's Dad. We had a great time and too much food. Robins always goes all the way with her picnics.
It is good to hear you will be taking some longer stops. You will enjoy your vacation better with a little more "chillaxin" time.
Hope thing as clearing up with your bronchitis and sinus.
Stay safe and healthy. Happy 4th of July.
    Jim
