West Coast 2009, Day 16

DAY 16 BLOG

WE DID IT!!!!!! Totally across Country!!!

Due to some issues we decided to forego high altitudes and head for sea level, thus the marathon 600 mile drive from Vegas to Santa Cruz, California. Originally we were scheduled to head to Yosemite, but diverted and headed to the coast, a very good choice.

After we left Vegas and entered California via Route 15, it became apparent why California is BROKE!!!

For one, it is the consummate “Nanny” state (ok I am OVER exaggerating for the whole state, but heck it will make for a few laughs).

There are highway signs warning you of EVERYTHING, and not just one but SEVERAL of the STUPIDEST things, I can only image what that cost…i.e “Downgrade beware of slow cars” What the heck, are people that stupid they don’t know they are going down a LITTLE hill. They have elevation signs every time it changes. We have drove over 3,500 miles and the 200 miles of Rt. 15 had more Altitude signs and watch this, and watch that and beware of this, and slow here, and OMG a sign NAMEING every little DITCH…I’m not lying, i.e. Turtle Ditch, Cactus Ditch, Cat Ditch, there were literally over 100 before Michael and I stopped counting. The past 15 states we have just driven through had MAYBE the total numbers of warnings combined than the stretch of 15 from Vegas. The worst part was the road was in miserable shape, and with all the signs, they had NO mile markers, and the exits were names not numbers. I guess the “Call Boxes” every ¼ mile compensates, that’s right thousands of “Call Boxes”…My god! In addition, no one can drive out here! I thought Virginia had bad drivers, but the loons leaving Vegas were by far the WORST drivers I have ever shared the road with. As Michael stated I used the air horns more yesterday than the 18 months with the Motorhome to date. I had major road rage mid way through California. With that said, the wine vineyards we drove through were awesome, as were some of the mountains, it was shame the sky was so hazy during the drive, but than again it averaged 105 deg from Vegas to almost the coast, so it was Hot and Hazy. The preservationists are doing their job, because some of the land is very pristine, and very relaxing to look at.

When we finally split from 15 and started up North towards Rt. 1 pacific dive, we were absolutely blown away with the Big Bluffs and majestic oceans views. The beauty far out weighed the nuttiness of the Rt. 15 drive.

Well, sorry for the delayed Blog but we are once again in a site with limited internet, and no cell coverage. Hopefully tomorrow it improves.

Until then, please have a very blessed day!
