2012 West Coast Adventure, Day 12

Day 12 July 4th, 2012:

Good evening / morning Goodyear, Arizona (near Phoenix)

Today was definitely not the typical 4th of July celebration for us! After departing the campground this we ventured West then North to see Sunset Creator, a 900 year old remnant of a erupted volcano. It was the first time we had ever walked on a lava field. In addition, we hiked up a 300’ mountain to get a look at the whole lava field. Thank God it was a cooler day so the 2 miles of hiking didn’t really hurt as bad. The landscape is very surreal and in many ways tranquil and very beautiful. The vegetation morphs into new and unique growths, and the entire eco system is altered forever. Very cool to see!

Nicholas really wanted to do a real hike, and he got his wish today, so he was happy even though we were nature sightseeing again. Michael was happy, because he has wanted to see a volcano since 2009…so a very good day.

After leaving there we decided to take a scenic by-way Rt. 86a. What a beautiful road, if you were in a SMART car! OMG…10 miles in, Patty had go in the back. The road was way too narrow, steep, and windy…we descended 3,000 feet into the valley and entrance of Sedona. The red rocks of Sedona are redder than anything we have seen.

After some bad navigation, and dad blowing his stack, we were back on track and heading towards Phoenix. 3 navigators, two maps, and a navigation system, and we still get lost…POOOOP! 

So in closing if you have not been tracking all the figures, the day started out at 7,000 feet, went as high as 8,500 feet, and we now are at 1,000 feet. So our bodies are all wacked! I think we all like the 5,000 – 8,000 feet range. This low altitude….yuck!

All and all a very blessed day and we are a few hours away from getting the windshield fixed…thus the reason we are in Phoenix! There is a good chance I will not blog tomorrow…so until the next blog have a great and blessed day(s)!

Ahhh...

Geeeeezzzz will this pose ever get old?

If you open this up you will see Michael and Nicholas in the center.  The lava field is extremely large.

Twisted trees very cool

1/2 a brotherly pose.

Michael and Nicholas up ahead of me and Patty...steep climb!

if you open this image up you can see the MH in that clearing.  This was 1/2 way up the climb.

Top of the ridge some 300' over the lava field.

This is a wall of lava...
Patty didn't make it past the 1st left hand turn, let alone the crazy tight switch backs...
Sedona city limits...
Bro-Code 2012-D12...Sneak attack your brother every chance you get!
