Good morning from Rock Springs Wyoming and what an un-believable morning…the sun is rising over the mountains and is simply majestic!
Yesterday as expected was when the world opened up to some of the most beautiful country we have ever seen. We have been through Wyoming 2 times already, but this is the first we stayed on the southern portion…Oh My Lord, is it breath taking.
Before we pulled out of the RV Park, we watched on TV the historic last flight of the space shuttle. We were all happy we got to see it, and it is sad to see the program shutting down.
Instead of driving just on Rt. 80, we decided to take the scenic byway Snowy Ridge…and boy are we glad we did, because it is unanimous…the BEST road we have ever driven on, and we have driven on a few…LOL. It was off the charts awesome due to the fact 80% of the 80 mile route was still covered in snow! Not a little…BUT SEVERAL FEET of snow, some places over 10 feet. Almost all of the side roads were still closed due to the snow and the temperature was 51 deg without the wind which was at least 30mph…it felt high 30’s at best, especially at the 11,000 ft summit we were on where it was Cold, Damp, Windy, Rainy, Sunny, Foggy, and simply just awesome. They had so much snow this year that the run off streams looked like raging white water rapids. Very impressive the amount of energy flowing in those streams! The first time I saw a lake at over 10,000 ft, I was in awe, and seeing several at 11,000 ft yesterday still has me in awe. It is just really wicked to see a lake and know you are over 2 miles high!
To make the ride was even more special was that the sky was overcast which added to the landscape. All of us were glued to the windshield and for the most part we were speechless except for the occasional…Oh My God…out bursts.
For me personally, this and the scenic byway in Utah, Moab were un-expected jewels…and if you are ever able to come here, I would HIGHLY recommend this off the beat and path trip. Just leave yourself several hours…wish we had more to hike and really explore the area.
Today, we head to Salt Lake city for a few days of sight-seeing. However, Michael has mapped out another byway called Flaming Gorge…it looks like another day of beauty and stunning scenes.
Just an FYI, tomorrow I may not blog since we are doing 2 days in Salt Lake City…not sure yet. However, I wanted you all to know that we really love it that you are following us on our adventure. We cannot thank you enough, because knowing you are reading has now become part of the adventure for Michael, Nicholas, Patty and me. Miss you all! ;-)…Also a special thanks to my co-workers for helping me be able to do this.
Historic last launch!
