2011 North West Adventure, Day 5

Day 5 July 8th 2011:

Good morning from Kimball Nebraska…what a LONG state and day yesterday…sorry for the delayed post.…we drove 470 miles today and we still aren’t out of Nebraska!

Yesterday we spent the day on Route 80. Every mile brought bigger and more beautiful views. This state is like Kansas, but on steroids in some regard. The highway was straight, and was literally uphill the entire day. We started at 800 ft elevation and tonight we are at 5,000 ft.. I personally never realized the elevation of Nebraska was so high…I should have considering it’s in the mountains. LOL! Due to the elevation we once again need to relieve pressure in the beds, watch food opening and be conscious of the altitude since moving forward the next several days we keep going up…

We made a few stops throughout the day, Buffalo Bills Historical Site – closed due to an impending flood, which was eerie to see everything sand-bagged. After that we stopped at the Cody Museum, and the kids rode go-carts, and ate some Barbecue from Whiskey Creek…very good, but Mark Sweetwood’s barbecue BLOWS this stuff away – Mark, some Ribs when we get home PLEASE…. We also stopped at the original Cabela’s, which is MUCH smaller than the one in Hamburg PA., but was on a hill and we saw an awesome sunset!

After a LONG day, the reward was to see what we have driven some 1,800 miles to see…BEAUTIFUL country! I cannot say it enough, if you have never seen this you cannot imagine, and pictures do it no justice. As Michael said tonight…”these are images that will only be in the mind…you cannot capture the true beauty out here”. Also he was the photographer in almost all the pictures posted today…Nice work son!

The coolest thing is we are only in Nebraska, and based on our past journeys, it only gets bigger and more beautiful until we hit the Northern West Coast, which is new for me so I am not sure what we will see just yet, I have some idea…but we will see. ;-).

We are staying at a campground off of Rt. 80 – Kimball RV Park - that is almost bankrupt because the state closed the exit to get here for construction 3 years ago…business has been around and thriving for 17 years…but now on the verge of closing because people do not like taking the detour to get here. I am glad we did…it is a great campground with great views…Thanks for sharing your tales tonight Mary!

Today we start some scenic By-Pass journeys through Wyoming…we do not have an end spot, all we know is we would like to be in Salt Lake City, Utah by Saturday night. So today, God willing, we will be able to get some good photos, and take our time and smell the roses through the by-ways…we are slightly ahead of schedule..

Well, until tomorrow, please have a Blessed Day!
